Frizzle Cohen Bantams
rizzle Cochin Bantams are known for their fluffy, outward-curling feathers and a docile, friendly temperament, making them excellent companion chickens. These ornamental bantams originate from China, possess feathered legs, and lay 2-3 small brown or cream-colored eggs per week. However, the frizzle feather gene does not always breed true, meaning some chicks will have smooth feathers. Due to their unique feathers, they are poor flyers and require careful protection from the elements.
Characteristics
Feathers: The defining trait is the frizzle feathering, where feathers curl outwards.
Temperament: They are sweet, gentle, and docile, enjoying interaction and often taming easily.
Appearance: They have feathered legs and feet, a single comb, and can come in various colors like black, blue, or white.
Size: As bantams, they are a smaller variety of Cochin, with hens weighing about 32 oz and roosters around 36 oz.
Care and Environment
Shelter: They need a dry, insulated coop and run, as their feathers are not very protective from wet or snowy conditions.
Fencing: Because their frizzle feathers hinder flight, they are typically not strong flyers, though some may be able to get over a fence.
Hygiene: The frizzy feathers can accumulate dirt, so regular checks and cleaning may be necessary, especially in wet weather.
Breeding
The frizzle feather trait is a mutation, and not all chicks born from a frizzle parent will have frizzle feathers. You will get both smooth and frizzle-feathered chicks.
Purpose
Frizzle Cochin Bantams are primarily ornamental birds, loved for their beautiful and unique appearance in home gardens or poultry exhibitions.
